This comprehensive moving checklist is designed to help you stay on track leading up to, during, and after moving day. Even with a long to-do list, moving doesn’t have to be stressful. Planning and Preparation is everything!

8 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR MOVE

o Ask your agent to recommend a great moving company (to find the best agent simply go to HotSellerTips.com and click the ‘Find My Agent’ tab)
o Start collecting estimates from moving companies
o Get some boxes. (If you commit to a moving company they will often give you boxes as part of the deal)
o Budget for moving expenses
o Create a ‘moving file’ to keep track of quotes, receipts and other important information
o Start researching your new community

7 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR MOVE 

o Start compiling medical, dental, shot and prescription records
o Ask doctors for referrals in your new city of required
o Arrange to have school records and veterinarian records transferred
o Gather copies of legal and financial records
o Call your insurance agent to see what changes you need to make to your new policy

o Contact health clubs, organizations, and groups to cancel or transfer memberships

6 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR MOVE

o Plan how you will move valuables and difficult to replace items (certified mail, or carry them with you)
o Begin purging your home. Separate items into those you will keep, donate, or discard
o Plan a garage sale
o Start using items that can’t be moved such as frozen foods

5 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR MOVE

o If you don’t have them yet, order boxes and moving supplies
o Begin packing items you don’t use often
o Clearly label each box with its contents and the room its destined for
o Pinpoint your move date
o File a change of address with the Postal Service, or ask them to 
hold your mail at the post office in your new city

4 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR MOVE

Notify these utility services of your move (both at your old and new locations). 

o Electric
o Water
o Gas
o Telephone
o Cell phone
o Cable/Satellite and Internet 

o Sewer
o Trash collection
o Make travel arrangements for your pets
o Put copies of pet medical and immunization records in your move file
o Host a garage sale

3 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR MOVE 

o Plan how to transport your plants
o Dispose of flammables, corrosive, and poisons.

2 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR MOVE

Notify these professional services of your move

o Accountant
o Attorney
o Doctor
o Dentist
o Financial Planner
o Health Insurance Provider
o Insurance Agent

o Schools

Notify these services/accounts of your move;

o Auto Finance Company
o Bank/Credit Union/ Finance Companies
o Credit Card Companies
o Health Club
o Home care service providers (lawn, exterminator etc.)
o Laundry service
o Magazines
o Monthly memberships 
o Newsletters
o Newspapers
o Pharmacy
o Store/Gas charge accounts

o Confirm travel arrangements for pets and family
o Assemble a folder of important info about your house for the next home owner

1 WEEK BEFORE YOUR MOVE

o Review your moving plans with your moving consultant. Email or call with questions
o Contact your bank or credit card company if you are planning to pay for your move by debit or credit card
o Print two copies of your moving bill and keep one in your move file
o Notify friends and family of your new address and phone number with a free Moving Notice
o Pack an essentials box to keep with you during the move
o Drain gas and oil from lawn equipment, gas grills heaters, etc.
o Drain water hoses and waterbeds
o Measure furniture and doorways to determine if larger pieces will fit through the door
o Empty and defrost refrigerator at least 24 hours before the move
o Fill any prescriptions you will need during the move

MOVING DAY

o Place carpet, floor and door frame protectors throughout your home
o Load goods in a pre-designated order, saving “last load” items for the rear of your shipment
o Check every room and closet one last time to make sure nothing is left behind
o Plan dinner (pizza always works)
o Leave a note with your new address so that future residents can forward stray mail

MOVING IN CHECKLIST

o Clean your new home
o Pick up any mail being held at the local post office
o Unload your items and begin organizing your new home
o Keep all receipts and documents in your move file and store 
it in an easy-to-remember location
o Get a new driver’s license and automobile registration, insurance, voting info, etc.
o Contact the local paper for a new subscription if required
